According to Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets have reached an agreement to trade veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Big Apple.
The transaction, according to Gutekunst, has not yet been finalized as the two parties sort out the details, but he anticipates that it will be finished soon.
According to sources from ESPN and NFL Network, the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player will reportedly be traded to the Jets along with the Packers’ 15th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, if Rodgers participates in at least 65% of the Jets’ offensive plays this season, the Packers will be awarded the 13th overall pick in this month’s draft, along with one of the Jets’ second-round picks and their first-round pick in 2024.
The 39-year-old Rodgers played for the Packers for the entirety of his 18-season NFL career, guiding them to a 31-25 triumph in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
Beginning Thursday evening in Kansas City, Missouri, comes the NFL Draft.
Rodgers stated his wish to continue playing in the NFL, specifically for the Jets, during a regular visit on “The Pat McAfee Show” in March.
“(From) my side, I want to express my love, gratitude, and appreciation for everything Green Bay has done for me. He remarked in March, “I have so much love and gratitude and simply a heart open for Packers fans and what it meant to be their quarterback. The Packers would like to move on, and the situation is what it is, in all honesty. They have communicated that to me in several words. They have explicitly stated that to other people.
It just needs to be done at this time because I still have that passion for playing and would like to play in New York.
The Packers and the Jets have been contacted by CNN for additional details.
In addition to winning MVP awards in 2011, 2014, 2020, and 2021, Rodgers also broke various records for his accuracy and timeliness.
Despite all of their individual achievements, Rodgers and the Packers were unable to add to their collection of championship rings, suffering a number of excruciating postseason losses over the years.
Since the dearth of offensive weapons he’s had to work with in previous years to the selection of his apparent successor, Jordan Love, in the first round of the 2020 draft, Rodgers has shown a growing unhappiness with events in Green Bay.
In order to get clarity on his future, Rodgers even visited a dark retreat this offseason. Rodgers had previously intimated that retirement was an option.
Rodgers has more than made up for any decline in his ability to escape on-rushing defenders with his accuracy and shrewdness before the snap, as well as his talent for bending defenses to his will.
The Packers had a rough start to the previous campaign, but Rodgers helped the team go on a four-game winning streak after a 4-8 record to help set up a Week 18 matchup with the Detroit Lions for a playoff spot. The Packers’ season was ended by Green Bay’s 20-16 defeat.
