The Los Angeles Rams’ predicament this summer is something that Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane wants to avoid.
Even though the Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI last year, some NFL players don’t appear to agree with their strategies.
The Rams mortgaged a significant chunk of their future in order to assemble a championship squad. They are notorious for using several draft selections to sign players like Von Miller, Jalen Ramsey, and Matthew Stafford. Even though they received a ring, the league has criticized them for their lack of consideration for the future. Brandon Beane, the general manager of the Buffalo Bills, is the most recent to criticize the Rams’ strategy.
“We’re trying to work our way out so that we don’t just have a tear-down,” Beane said on Tuesday. “And you notice it from a team here or there that says, ‘Man, we can’t do it. The only way to get rid of some of these enormous wages is to either attempt to push it off farther into the future and make it tougher, or to start trading, releasing, and accepting those hits.
“We want to remain competitive every year, so we’re trying not to do that. You won’t always be able to purchase a high-priced item, so accept that fact. I am aware that going to do that is seductive. And please understand that although we want as many excellent athletes as possible, we also need to be financially prudent.
Although Beane didn’t specifically say the Rams, it is clear that he is making a reference to them.
The Bills executive is hardly the first NFL executive to criticize Los Angeles’ approach to team building this offseason. Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, criticized the Rams’ strategy in the beginning of April, saying, “That’s what you have to be careful about.”
Los Angeles is currently suffering the consequences of consistently going all in. To try and free up cash, the Rams have dealt away guys like Ramsey and Allen Robinson for pitiful sums of money. Due to the Stafford deal, they are now missing their first-round pick for the eighth straight draft, which is particularly unfortunate given that the pick is No. 6 overall.
This mentality allowed the Rams to win a championship despite the difficult difficulties they are now experiencing. Many supporters would gladly endure a few disappointing seasons to witness their club win the Lombardi Trophy, like Los Angeles did in 2022.
